Whitewall Gets in the Fall Spirit
The last days of summer always feel bittersweet for us at Whitewall. But the pull of crisp fall weather and that back-to-school start anew does get us every time. Summer may feel a little shorter with every passing year, yet we are always ready and excited for the next season of exhibitions, collections, events, and new projects.
Indeed, this September we hit the ground running with new editions of fairs in New York like Independent 20th Century and The Armory Show, plus new additions like PHOTOFAIRS New York. Fashion week, and ultimately month—moving from New York to London, then Milan and Paris—will take us into October, and then the train has certainly left the station, full speed ahead.
Whitewall’s Second Annual Harmony Issue
But we’ll be sure to help you (and ourselves) find a little moment of Zen with this second edition of the Harmony Issue. It being the fall issue, we’ve got a mix of fashion, like Colm Dillane of KidSuper—a wunderkind who has collaborated with some of the biggest names in fashion. There’s Kei Ninomiya of Noir Kei Ninomiya, as well as Carly Mark of Puppets & Puppets. We also hear from DESTREE’s Laetitia Lumbroso and Géraldine Guyot-Arnault about cultivating an all-female environment and business, in addition to their creative process.
We’ve also got a focus on craft, specifically the winner of the 2023 Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, Eriko Inazaki. We’ve got our eyes on two artists making major works in clay—Zizipho Poswa, out of South Africa, and Roberto Lugo, whose studio is in Philadelphia.
Sustainability remains top of mind, too, and in these pages you’ll hear from fashion designers like Nia Thomas, whose eponymous label has taken a conscious approach since its inception. Kasper Egelund of Vipp discusses a new twist on the Danish brand’s iconic trash bin, made from actual waste. How meta!
Environmental and political responsibility are essential for the artist Tomás Saraceno, coming off of his recent exhibition at the Serpentine in London. For the summer-long show, he opened up the galleries into Kensington Gardens, allowing for all forms of life to take part. He spoke with us about why he saw visitors to his show as more than just viewers, but actual active participants.

On our cover is the spellbinding work of artist María Berrío. Her paintings combine the ordinary with the mythic. Her recent exhibition “The Children’s Crusade” at the ICA Boston was like seeing through a child’s eyes—with the innocent and imagined bumping up against the stark realities of life. Infused in all her pieces is a sense of both wonder and hope.
Which leaves us where we often find ourselves, grappling with the realities of contemporary life and searching for wonder and hope in the creative worlds of art, fashion, design, and more.
