Chicago Invites Chicago To New York

New York is getting a little taste of Chicago this summer with the Galerie Lelong exhibition “Chicago Invites Chicago.” This show presents six contemporary artists based in Chicago and captivates viewers with their intricacies in details and artistic talent.

Three artists showing with Galerie Lelong were asked to invite three more artists from the windy city. McArthur Binion presented his new work from his “DNA: Seasons” series. It features hand-applied oil stick over copies of his birth certificate and address books. Binion extended his invitation to John Phillips and Phillips did not disappoint. His vivid paintings brightly excite memories of bright American Pop Art.

Samuel Levi Jones stripped book covers from encyclopedia sets and law books to enlighten us with his own message about knowledge and power. Jones invited Bethany Collins, another artist that utilizes her talent with text and language manipulation.

In the center of the gallery are two large-scale floor drawings by Tony Lewis created from roofing paper, tape, and dense layers of graphite arranged in a sculptural form. Lewis asked Nate Young to join the exhibition with his new drawings housed in handcrafted wooden wall frames that resemble triptych altars.
