Enrico Marone Cinzano Presents the Alfa Romeo Recycled “Dondolo” in Milan

Italian designer Enrico Marone Cinzano is debuting a new sustainable furniture piece at Salone del Mobile exclusively for the Italian gallery Rossana Orlandi.

Titled Dondolo (or Rocking Chair), the functional and radical piece reimagines the age-old rocking chair, and is made from salvaged Alfa Romeo car parts. The chair combines mechanized modernity with conventional furniture typology and stands as testimony to both Cinzano’s industrial past roots and his chosen calling: proving that luxury furniture and sustainability are not mutually exclusive.

Cinzano’s sustainably-driven designs were recently on view during this year’s Art Basel Hong Kong, where Pearl Lam galleries premiered his debut solo-exhibition. The show, entitled “China Clean,” featured eight sculptural pieces inspired by the designer’s frequent travels to mainland China, during which he was astounded by the population’s well-preserved connection to nature—an experience that had challenged his preconceptions on modern China.

The collection centers around furniture crafted from recycled elmwood using traditional Chinese joinery, beeswax with natural lacquer finish, and eco-friendly glue, and includes a flat-pack Qing chair with sailor-inspired carvings, a valet complete with a hand-carved skull, and a dramatic “Double Happiness” cabinet.

Enrico Marone Cinzano is a descendant of an Italian textile company family on his mother’s side, and of the Cinzano liquor company family on his father’s side. Before founding the Enrico Marone Cinzano Collection, focused on ethical and sustainable furniture design, the Torino born designer ran Project Alabama, an environmentally-friendly, Florentine fashion company together with Natalie Chanin.
