Li Liao: Attacking the Boxer from Behind is Forbidden

Klein Sun Gallery is currently showing “Attacking the Boxer from Behind is Forbidden,” an invigorating exhibition of multi-media and a performance by Li Liao. Visitors are immediately immersed into the subject of confrontation and conflict, when encountered with the hired boxer in the exhibitions namesake, a performance piece that takes place Tuesday to Saturday from 12pm to 5pm.

Also on view is the looping video, A Slap in Wuhan (2010), features Li at the entrance of a street in Wuhan waiting with his eyes closed for a hired stranger to come slap him. A second video in the corner of the gallery, Single Bed (2011), shows Li lying asleep in public spaces in Wuhan with confused onlookers refusing to interfere. Among these works that tackle similar themes, Li showcases Weight Loss Plan (2011), a photographic journal with notes written directly on the gallery’s wall to show his journey of surviving on 350 RMB a month.
