Edition returned to Art Basel Miami Beach this year after a successful debut in 2013, and features 12 galleries in the field of prints and limited-editioned works. Offering collectors an opportunity to add both blue chip and emerging artists to their collections at a lower price point, Edition did not disappoint in the range or quality of works available.
Among the works we loved was a series of four new works by Gordon Cheung at Alan Cristea Gallery, based on the floral still-lifes of Jan Van Huysum. In the same moody palette of the Flemish Baroque style, the prints had an almost glitchy feel, with vertical streaks of color obscuring the blooms.
Gemini G.E.L. showcased a booth of heavy hitters we would love to have on our walls at home. There were four John Baldessari prints in his signature style, and a beautiful new Ellsworth Kelly two-color lithograph titled Blue Curve/Red Curve. Sophie Calle’s mixed-media In Memory of Frank Gehry’s Flowers was available, and Julie Mehretu’s Myriads, Only By Dark was a striking presence in the booth, with hints of color only visible upon a close inspection. Two Roy Lichtenstein landscapes in the Chinese style were also notable, and a nice option for someone looking for unexpected additions from a Pop art icon.
At Carolina Nitsch, the editions were playful, and plentiful. Thomas Schütte’s lithographs seemed to explore the relationship between two old men – in clay. It was easy to imagine the conversations between these two playing out in each vignette. For the collector with an especially large wall to fill, there was Sigmar Polke’s 2004 suite of 40 screenprints, Volmond Im Widder (perhaps an excuse to find a bigger apartment?).
Other standouts were Anish Kapoor’s beautiful Fold, I etching at Paragon in sensuous pinks and peach, and Ghada Amer & Reza Farkhondeh’s Rose Hearts at Pace Prints, capturing two women in a romantic embrace.
Based on the quality of the galleries and works featured in this year’s group, we expect to see Edition continue to attract collectors and grow at Art Basel Miami Beach for years to come.
