Monika Sosnowska’s Maquettes for Atelier Calder

Current resident of the Atelier Calder, Monika Sosnowska will present her work produced during her three-month residency in Saché this weekend, July 19 and 20, as one of more than 50 international artists who have completed the Atelier’s program. The exhibition features works meant to disorient the viewer as objects that typically would not occupy the same space are presented side by side.

Sosnowska returned to her often-used theme of the maquette during her residency, starting with models of her works from 2005 and then developing new works intended to be enlarged into full-size sculptures. Referencing Alexander Calder’s own process of creating sculptures, Sosnowska used a similar method to enlarge her works and juxtaposed the models with their actual-size counterparts. As a result, viewers must consider the relationship of the monumental sculptures and the space around them.

Atelier Calder, the longest residency program for contemporary artists, was established by members of Calder’s family and the Centre National des Arts Plastiques and celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Le Chien en trois couleurs, a sculpture by the late artist, was installed on the Atelier’s grounds in Saché in honor of the anniversary, marking the first presentation of a Calder work on site since the program’s inception in 1989.

Sosnowska’s open studio will take place this Saturday and Sunday, from 3-7pm at 12 route du Carroi, 37190 Saché, France.
