Top Exhibitions Opening this Week in New York (Nov. 18-24)

FRIDAY

Susana Solano: “A meitat de camí-Halfway There” at Jack Shainman Gallery
November 22 – January 11
Opening: November 22, 6-8PM
524 West 24th Street & 513 West 20th Street
The exhibition will span the past 26 years of Solano’s practice and will include historical works that have never been shown in New York alongside new sculptures. One of Spain’s most prominent contemporary artists, Solano first gained international recognition in the 80s and 90s and continues to delve into her powerful, intimate and poetic practice.

Christian Marclay: “New Paintings and Works on Paper” at Paula Cooper Gallery
November 22 – January 18
Opening: November 22, 6-8PM
534 West 21st Street
This new group of works consists of silk-screen on painted backgrounds, featuring onomatopoeias that evoke the sound of painting actions (SPLORCH! SLLURP! WHOOMPH!). Torn from the comic book pages, collaged, blown up and printed on canvas and paper, the onomatopoeias extend Marclay’s investigation into the relationship between sound and image, sampling elements from art and popular culture.

™ Davy: “Candela” at Eleven Rivington
November 22 – December 22
Opening: November 22, 6-8PM
11 Rivington Street
“Candela” is comprised of a focused series of 10 x 8 inch oil paintings which the artist began last year, following a group of figurative works that were presented as a solo show at LISTE, Basel in June 2012. In these canvases, painted from observation, full figures were posed and defined by ambient candlelight.

Tobias Spichtig: “This is what happened in the jungle” at Eleven Rivington
November 22 – December 22
Opening: November 22, 6-8PM
195 Chrystie
Tobias Spichtig’s eponymous photographs present shots taken at the zoo, in artificial recreation of the rain and forest. In Spichtig’s large compositions on canvas, executed in printing inks, the print medium is tripped of its function.  These paintings become prints without a code that recall watercolors.

Josephine Meckseper at Andrea Rosen Gallery
November 23 – January 18
Opening: November 22, 6-8PM
525 West 24th Street
Meckseper’s new work attempts to construct the present as archaeology and to create a window into a historic past at the same time. The exhibition will feature large-scale vitrines, mirror wall panels and photographic works that reveal a historical link between contemporary consumer display forms and their early twentieth century precursors.

SATURDAY

Boris Mikhailov: “Four Decades” at Dominique Lévy
November 23 – February 8
Opening: November 23, 6-8PM
909 Madison Avenue
For over 30 years, Ukrainian-born Mikhailov has investigated the fate of the individual within the framework of history, making life-size color photographs that reveal the ever-widening gulf between public ideology and private existence in post-communist Eastern Europe.

“Macho Man, Tell It To My Heart” at Artists Space
November 24 – February 23
Opening: November 23, 6-8PM
38 Greene Street
“Macho Man, Tell It To My Heart” highlights a curated selection of works from the collection of Julie Ault. As a founding member of the artists’ collaborative Group Material (1976-1996), and as artist, curator, writer and editor, Julie Ault’s visionary practice is reflected in the unique nature of her collection. The exhibition constitutes a body of shared concerns and relations amongst a largely New York-based art community that Julie Ault has been central to over the past thirty years.

SUNDAY

Tabor Robak: “Next-Gen Open Beta” at Team Gallery
November 24 – January 12
Opening: November 24, 6-8PM
83 Grand Street
Tabor Robak’s work employs computer generated imaging to create videos of invented worlds. Working in programs including Unity, After Effects, Photoshop and Cinema 4D, the artist explores a secondary, digital reality, rendered in what he refers to as a “Photoshop tutorial aesthetic” or a “desktop screensaver aesthetic.” The works are appropriative, both in their subject matter and aesthetic, using elements purchased and then edited for his purposes.
