Hank Willis Thomas
on Art Basel Miami Beach

The biggest complaints about Art Basel Miami Beach is that there’s too much to do and too many people to see. First timers will find this dizzying, while seasoned fair-goers will know when to leave an event for another, or when to call it quits altogether. For our pre-ABMB coverage, we asked people working in the art world how they navigate the big week in Miami. We start this column with Hank Willis Thomas whose exhibition “What Goes Without Saying” is currently on view at Jack Shainman Gallery until December 8.

My first time at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2004 I decided I wanted to be a quote on quote fine artist.
I plan to accomplish getting to the beach and relaxing for once.
I prioritize my time by people I run into. Miami isn’t over because it’s Miami. If you can take it, it will be there.
My advice for an ABMB first timer isdon’t take anyone for granted. Hang out as long as you can and don’t believe the hype.
Every year I make sure I have at least one meal at 3 o’clock in the morning.
My hotel of choice is usually one I can’t afford.
At the end of the night, you’ll find me at the side of Sanford Biggers and Theaster Gates.
The event I won’t miss this year is a secret.
You won’t see me without my dear one.
I’ll go to the beach if I keep my promise.

Hank Willis Thomas is a contemporary visual artist and photographer whose primary interests are race, advertising and popular culture.
