Preview ArtCrush’s 2017 Auction to Benefit the Aspen Art Museum

Every August in Aspen, ArtCrush welcomes top art players from around the world to partake in an intimate, week-long benefit for the Aspen Art Museum (AAM). This year’s fundraising auction of donated works is available for preview on Paddle8, open through August 3. Previously, we’ve seen donated works for auction by renowned artists like Ai Weiwei, Gabriel Orozco, Diane Arbus, Liz Larner, and the Haas Brothers, but this year, for its 13th iteration, we are seeing some exciting new pieces.

All 76 works range in medium and materials, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, and more. Artist Daniel Arsham donated two works—the sculpture White Glass Seated Woman and an untitled tempera paint on canvas piece. From John Giorno is an acrylic on canvas work entitled EATING THE SKY, alongside a Maynard Monrow mixed media piece entitled Untitled/Rarified Blight. Richard Phillips, a long-time supporter of ArtCrush, donated an oil on linen piece, To Be Titled.

Vibrant, colorful pieces like Pretzel Landslide from Nina Katchadourian, Old Boyfriends by David McDermott and Peter McGough, Crown of the Continent, Montana by David Benjamin Sherry, Tightrope: Today’s Feelings 5 by Elias Sime, and 20 (average number of minutes a plastic bag is used before being discarded) by Hayal Pozanti are included in the sale, as well. A sculptural lighting piece, Girl Lamp, by Katie Stout, shines, as does Rose by Whitewall’s Spring 2017 issue cover star Marilyn Minter, Untitled by Adam Pendleton, Concrete Landscape by Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Untitled by Günther Förg, and EVERY WHICH WAY + UP by ArtCrush’s 2017 honoree, Lawrence Weiner.

The sale can be previewed in-person in Aspen this week, between a number of ArtCrush events. WineCrush, a cocktail and dinner reception, kicks off on August 2 at ArtCrush Chair and AAM National Council member Amy Phelan and Board of Trustees Co-President John Phelan’s art-filled home, presented by Sotheby’s, W Magazine, and Audi. PreviewCrush, a preview of some of the donated works, will host a cocktail reception on August 3 at Baldwin Gallery. And the next day, on August 4, the works will move on to Buttermilk Ski Area for the main event of the week. There, a wine tasting, seated dinner, and live auction will occur, concluding with the presentation of the 2017 Aspen Award for Art to Weiner. The celebration will culminate with guests heading to Belly Up for the after party, AfterCrush, with music by DJ Eve Salvail.
