Here, Whitewaller has included all of the important details for the 2019 edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong, and the fifth edition of the Art Central fair.
Art Basel

The 2019 edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong will feature 242 galleries from 36 countries and territories. Of those presenting, 21 are new exhibitions to the fair this year. This year’s presentation of “Encounters” is curated by Alexie Glass Kantor and consists of 12 large-scale installations, with eight premiering at this year’s show. Entitled “Still We Rise,” the showing focuses on current issues of uncertainty associated with looking back at the past and questioning the future. Special highlights for “Encounters” are: Lee Bul’s Willing To Be Vulnerable – Metalized Balloon, presented by Galerie Thaddeus Ropac, Lehmann Maupin, and PKM Gallery; Jose Dávila’s Homage to the Square, presented by Sean Kelly; and a new work by Elmgreen & Dragset about the hyper-reality of cities, presented by Kukje Gallery, Massimo De Carlo, and Perrotin.
Art Central

For its fifth edition, Art Central—presented by its lead partner, United Overseas Bank—is exhibiting 107 international galleries across its “Central” and “Context” sectors, 32 of which are new. The fair’s strong dedication to a regional focus also continues, with approximately seventy-five percent of its exhibitions hailing from the Asia-Pacific area. The fair’s Managing Director Charles Ross is joined by the Fair Director, Shuyin Yang, to welcome 24 galleries with solo artists, including those by Yu-ichi Inoue at Nukaga Gallery (Tokyo), Satoru Tamura at Tezukayama Gallery (Osaka), Heri Dono at The Columns Gallery (Seoul), among others. Other fair highlights also include: Gallery Hyundai (Seoul) returns with a lineup of esteemed Korean art that represents the country’s diverse art scene, seen with works by Chung Sang-hwa, Seundja Rhee, Suh Seok, Seung-taek Lee, Shin Sung Hy, Minjung Kim, and Choe-U Ram; Puerta Roja (Hong Kong) is showing works by established and emerging artists from Spain and Latin America, like Carlos Cruz-Diez, Fernando Prats, Laurent Martin, Javier León Pérez, and María García Ibáñez; Marc Straus (New York) is exhibiting a two-artist booth, featuring hard-edged shaped canvas works by American pioneer Charles Hinman alongside contemporary ceramics by Yuki Hayama; and more.
