Whitewaller DTLA: Where to Eat and Sip

Summit LA19 takes place November 8—11, 2019. It is the annual flagship event for Summit, bringing together an international group of 2500 people for a series of talks, immersive art installations, culinary experiences, and performances. For the occasion, we’re guiding those in town to the best restaurants and bars Downtown Los Angeles has to offer.

Bestia
In 2012, husband and wife chefs Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis opened Bestia—their first restaurant focused on a multi-regional Italian cuisine with a “from scratch” approach. With pizzas made in an Acunto oven, handmade pastas, and pastries, the restaurant also welcomes guests to an unforgettable atmosphere of contemporary designs inside a building made of industrial materials.

Bavel
In April 2018, husband and wife chefs Ori Menashe and Genevieve Gergis opened Bavel to showcase their Middle Eastern roots in Israel, Morocco, Turkey, and Egypt. Utilizing slow cooking techniques with aromatic woods, spices, and pickling, the restaurant offers a new perspective on the complex cuisines, joining the owners’ first restaurant, Bestia.

Majordōmo
Opened in January 2018, Majordōmo hit Los Angeles with large-format dishes, table-side components, and plenty of noodles. By Momofuku creator David Chang, Majordōmo takes a different approach compared to his other restaurants, with a series of instant classics like the boneless short rib and the bo ssäm.

Apotheke
At the bar and lounge Apotheke, cocktails take on a new form, crafted from a combination of Apothecary and mixology to create high quality medicinal sips. Visitors at the spot can relax in opulent interiors, while choosing from a menu of “prescriptions,” made from fresh, organic ingredients and house-made elixirs, divided into categories like pain killers, stress relievers, and aphrodisiacs.

Bon Temps
A Californian brasserie with foundations in French cuisine, Bon Temps is pastry chef Lincoln Carson’s first solo restaurant. The eatery offers an all-day dining experience including a morning patisserie service, market lunch, a raw bar, reimagined contemporary brasserie fare, large-format dishes that are served table-side, a decadent dessert menu, and a curated wine list by Krystal Kleeman.

Broken Shaker
Residing on the rooftop of Freehand Los Angeles is Broken Shaker, a laidback urban retreat with lush greenery and a view of the city’s skyline. Using homemade elixirs and fresh herbs and produce, the bar offers a list of playful, hand-crafted cocktails and street-food inspired snacks perfect for enjoying next to the pool.
