In order to give you the best of Mexico City around the fair, Whitewaller spoke with gallerist and Co-Founder of PROXYCO, Alexandra Morris.
FAVORITE SPOT TO FIND INSPIRATION
When I was an undergrad studying Art History in Mexico City, our professors would often take us on day trips to the city center. I found then, as I still do today, that it visually captures Mexican history and culture so accurately. There is an exhilarating blend of Mesoamerican, colonial, modern, and contemporary architecture and art at play. It reminds me how rich our culture is and it makes me so proud to have been born there. Everything I have ever seen there has formed my identity and that of my art gallery.
BEST OFF-THE-BEATEN-PATH PLACE TO SEE ART
One of my favorite ways to experience art is in artists’ studios. Many people don’t realize how pleased artists are to receive art lovers in their personal spaces and it’s as easy as finding their email address on their websites and writing them a message. Some of my favorite art experiences have been in the beautiful and unique spaces of contemporary Mexico City-based artists such as Fabiola Menchelli, Lucía Vidales, and Marco Rountree.
BEST KEPT SECRET IN MEXICO CITY
I love getting coffee at Ale Orlaineta’s Café Katsina. Not only is the coffee delicious and locally sourced from the family’s own farm, but the atmosphere is brilliantly decorated with artworks by Ale’s husband, contemporary artist Edgar Orlaineta. The cafe is ideally situated near wonderful cultural attractions such as the Convent of the Capuchinas by architect Luis Barragan, several beautiful quintessential Mexican plazas, and the amazing museums of Anahuacalli and Dolores Olmedo. Cafe Katsina is a wonderful respite from the busy city.
