“A Romance of Paradise” is Allison Janae Hamilton’s inaugural exhibition with Marianne Boesky Gallery. On view is a series of new videos, photographs, and sculptures that continue the artist’s investigation of environmental justice, tradition, and storytelling. The title represents the southward expansion of the United States, which viewed the region as a place of paradise, of Eden. The artist explores the myth created from that narrative, in tandem with the colonization and exploitation of the South’s land and people, and the devastating impact of climate change on rural Black communities.
