Mary Weatherford: Neon Paintings

Now on view at the Aspen Art Museum is the artist Mary Weatherford‘s exhibition “Neon Paintings.” For its presentation, the Los Angeles-based painter—who’s incorporated neon lights into her large-scale works since 2012—is showing pivotal pieces from the past decade. Since the 1980s, Weatherford’s works have spanned a wide variety of subjects and techniques, but all communicate scenes she’s personally associated with. In each, she challenges the idea of abstract painting with methods like screen printing and collage. In “Neon Paintings,” we see works that reference specific circumstances of time and place—like Blue Cut Fire from 2017, an emotional depiction of the fires in the San Gabriel Mountains of California the year before.
