Daniel Arsham: Turning Wrenches

Library Street Collective presents “Turning Wrenches,” a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Daniel Arsham, on view through August 7. The exhibition includes 1:3 scale replicas of cars and other automotive artifacts as a homage to the Detroit automotive industry and global car culture. This tribute is formed through the artist’s own craft and the legacies of technicians and makers.

Arsham’s fascination with cars began as a youth and his admiration for Porsches from an early age, which ultimately led to his purchase and restoration of a 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo. A replica of the restored Porsche is featured in the exhibition, connecting the work to Arsham’s personal story and concepts of childhood memories. In addition to his car sculptures, the artist expands his thematic relevance through automobile and film posters. The posters have eroded over time, but they reveal crystallized forms surrounding the typography and images.
