David Kordansky Gallery is presenting new and recent paintings by Raul Guerrero in the exhibition “Fata Morgana.” Open through August 28, three bodies of work follow the artist’s exploration of his own ancestry and cultural environments, taking cues from his travels to locations of interest (like the Great Plains of South Dakota, Latin America, and present-day Los Angeles) and historically informed fictional narratives. In the works featured, Guerrero’s large-scale portraits and scenarios depict happenings that contemplate ideas and events like the differing cultures found on the American-Mexican border, the 1662 shipwreck of the Spanish Nuestra Señora de Atocha, and an appropriated 1880s lithograph, which the artist has reimagined and added the words “FIN, Es Una Pelicula Mexican,” for the work Ataque de Una Diligencia.
