Open through September 11 at Various Small Fires, Sean Raspet’s debut solo show in Los Angeles features three connected bodies of work created across the last several years. Combining science and art, Raspet is presenting works that center carbon as their primary material, and which work to remove the gas from the atmosphere through various methods. Viewers will find from the ∂ (various species) series a number of plants that have produced random genetic mutations after being exposed to chemical mutagens and radiation; a metric ton of CO2 removed from the atmosphere, part of Atmospheric Reformulation (CO2 Direct Air Capture); and a living installation of moss, which acts as an air filtration system, titled Filter (Physcomitrium patens: patchoulol synthase-(+), linalool synthase-(+)).
