Michele Pred: Equality of Rights

Katy Donoghue

5 September 2022

Featured in the exhibition “Equality of Rights,” Michele Pred’s look at pay equity and abortion rights in the fight for equal rights for women is particularly timely, though certainly not a new topic of discussion for the Swedish-American artist and activist. Open at Nancy Hoffman Gallery September 8—October 22, Pred demands action against inequities both present and historic through the works on view, which include a series of assemblages and sculptural objects like the giant Abortion (pills). Though the objects speak volumes on their own—we’re thinking of a vintage quilt laden with expired birth control packs called Sexual Revolution, and the diptych Equal Pay, made of pink dollar bills—Pred’s informative approach is derived directly from facts and data regarding things like access to safe and effective reproductive care and the percentages earned by women in comparison to their male counterparts.

Michele Pred is in conversation with Maura Reilly on Saturday, September 10 at 3pm. And on September 15th, at 7 P.M., the artist will activate the exhibition with a special “Equal Pay” performance.
