5 Reasons CAN Art Fair Ibiza Is the Art Event of the Mediterranean Summer

As the centerpiece of Ibiza Art Week, CAN Art Fair Ibiza has built a reputation for doing things differently. More than 1,000 visitors attended opening day, strong sales were reported across participating galleries, and collectors, museums, and institutions quickly snapped up works spanning painting, sculpture, ceramics, embroidery, and installation. Beyond the booths, an expanded public program and city-wide exhibitions reinforce CAN Art Fair Ibiza’s position as one of Europe’s most distinctive contemporary art destinations.

A Strong Opening of CAN Art Fair Ibiza

Momentum was evident from the moment the fair opened its doors. Institutions wasted little time acquiring significant works, underscoring the confidence surrounding this year’s edition.

Among the most notable purchases, Govern+Es Baluard Museum acquired textile artistEla Fidalgo‘s Lo que queda de nosotros, Hamish Fulton‘s cast-iron sculpture Seven Pieces, and Chema Lopez‘s John Ruskin’s Little Rock. Additional acquisitions came from Paradores Nacionales, OD Hotels, and the Nadine Foundation, bringing the total to eight acquired works across sculpture and painting.

CAN Art Fair Ibiza also celebrated emerging talent through its residency awards. Nicolas Lefebvre, presented by Patricia Low Contemporary, received the residency at CCA Andratx, while Rafaela de Ascanio, represented by Georgina Pounds Gallery, earned the Las Cicadas residency, highlighting CAN Ibiza’s continued commitment to supporting artists beyond the fair itself.

Monumental Public Art Takes Over Ibiza

One of CAN Art Fair Ibiza’s defining characteristics is its commitment to bringing contemporary art into everyday life, and this year’s public art program is among its strongest to date.

Leading the program is Stefan Brüggemann‘s monumental corten steel sculpture Hashtag, installed along the shoreline of Sant Antoni. Transforming one of the defining symbols of the digital age into a minimalist sculptural landmark, the work invites visitors to consider how they experience—and share—the island. The installation is especially significant as Brüggemann’s first permanent public artwork anywhere in the world.

Additional interventions continue that dialogue across Ibiza. Amalie Jakobsen‘s Osculating Orbits animatesPaseo Vara de Rey with vibrant sculptural forms, while Oriol Enguany‘s anthropomorphic sculptures greet visitors at the entrance to FECOEV, extending the fair well beyond its exhibition halls.

The Entire Island Becomes an Exhibition

Rather than limiting the experience to a single venue, CAN Art Fair Ibiza continues to activate the island through its expansive OFF Program and CAN Local initiative.

Historic buildings, cultural centers, and unexpected locations host site-specific projects by Balearic artists, encouraging visitors to experience Ibiza through both contemporary art and local history. Highlights include Marina Marón at Sa Punta des Molí, Antonio Villanueva at Es Polvorí, Catalina Julve andFederica Furbelli atFaro Ses Coves Blanques, andMercedes Balle atCentro Cultural de Jesús.

Meanwhile, CAN Art Fair Ibiza Local spotlights the creative communities already rooted on the island through exhibitions at MACE Museum, Can Garita, Ses12Naus, Estudio Laterna, Espacio Micus, Estudi Tur Costa, In-Between Gallery, and other independent spaces. Together, these programs blur the boundaries between international fair and local cultural festival.

More than 30 galleries from Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia come together this year, creating a presentation that balances established names with emerging voices.

Curated by Saša Bogojev, the selection emphasizes discovery and dialogue rather than sheer scale. Galleries from Madrid, Barcelona, Amsterdam, Berlin, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Shanghai, São Paulo, Antwerp, and Copenhagen present works across painting, sculpture, textiles, ceramics, installation, and video.
