The world’s top commercial galleries couldn’t have been happier when Art Basel closed yesterday, Sunday, June 16, reporting outstanding sales figures across the board. Crowds of spectators – a record 86,000 – flocked to the Swiss city throughout the week to see works on display from more than 300 participating galleries.
Avid collectors thronged the maze of booths presented by major players that included David Zwirner, Sadie Coles, and Hauser & Wirth; while Thomas Demand, Theaster Gates, and Roni Horn were just some of the artists in attendance.
Described by Cheim & Read’s Adam Sheffer as “the gold standard of the international art circuit,” it was a week that marked Art Basel, once again, as the beating heart of the contemporary art world.
