Design collective Based Upon presented the unique immersive installation “Breath” at Masterpiece London 2017 (June 29-July 5) earlier this month. It consisted of five harmonious artworks surrounding a meditating figure in the center.
“For this year’s Masterpiece we have created a sanctuary. The common factor in work that we admire is its ability to induce a cessation of mind. There is no need to commentate, just to be, still, with the work,” said Based Upon’s Ian Abell.
Equating stillness with luxury, “Breath” showcased a series of light pieces to direct the viewers breath, and a collection of wearable works in bronze and stone meant to assist in finding one’s inner peace, labeled “Based Upon Self.”
The project was inspired by the texture of ancient limeston on the island Inis Oirr, off the coast of Ireland. Connecting the breath with the landscape, Based Upon succeeding in creating space to seek inner harmony and connect to ancient rhythms.
