Between June 9–16, visitors are invited to Basel Social Club, a nonprofit event formed by a collective of art professionals in 2022. The club’s third edition continues with its mission to include everyone intrigued by the contemporary art world, free of charge.

In this year’s rendition, Basel Social Club takes both its exhibitors and viewers into the farmlands of Basel-Landschaft, or Baselland, 50 miles south of the Messeplatz of the city. The event stretches through 50 acres of farmland that span from the city’s borders to the countryside forest. This aligns with Basel Social Club’s history of hosting its yearly events in immersive locations: its inaugural 2022 edition took place in a 1930s villa, and its 2023 programming took over an old mayonnaise factory.

From its location to its participants, the Basel Social Club 2024 edition immerses its visitors into idyllic pastoral Baselland. The event’s far-spread installations are open to the elements–rain or shine. This also means that local host farmers additionally engage with the event, as active participants, sometimes with their cows placed directly next to the artwork.

The “gallery” for this year’s Basel Social Club edition thus embraces the outdoors and the city’s surrounding communities, as the club places its artistic installations throughout the fields, among the trees, and in nearby barns. The outdoor setting additionally shines a light on the event’s focus on landscape, agriculture, and farm animals.
Who’s On Show at Basel Social Club?
Featuring over 70 galleries and more than 150 artists, the event provides visitors the chance to observe international and local talent. Local exhibitors include Basel’s Amore, BC Gallery, and Hebel_121. Other global gallery participants include Mendes Wood DM, Mai 36 Galerie, Drei & Esther Schipper, and Gypsum & FOR Space.

In addition to its outdoor installations, Basel Social Club’s events also include a fusion of culinary and performance experiences. This year promises multiple musical performances per day throughout the week, from many Swiss and international performers such as Astrit Ismaili, Abdullah Miniawy Trio, and Die wilden Unterhosen. These performances are equally immersed in the pastoral scene of the event, with its main stage venue among the sprawling fields.

Special Shows and Projects in Baselland
Alongside its installations and musical performances, the event includes Nature Trail, a collaboration between the Basel Social Club and the University of Basel. Visitors are invited to follow the trail’s path through the serene Swiss Bruderholz countryside, stopping at 32 planned stations including farmland and viewpoints. The trail is a piece of Basel Social Club’s widespread dedication to generating a well-rounded artistic experience for visitors, as it uplifts the location’s agricultural and natural history.
