“Bon Voyage” Offers the Dream of Travel, at a Time We Can’t

The nomadic gallery project GIRLGIRLGIRL Gallery recently took over Galerie Charraudeau in Paris to present “Bon Voyage,” a group show by Eastern-European female artists, curated and organized by Yulia Belousova. Amid the current situation where it feels nearly impossible to travel, the exhibition focuses on the idea of being somewhere else and exploring new horizons, sometimes by going inside oneself instead of outside.

The show features work by female artists from Russia, Georgia, and Ukraine, such as Ekaterina Burlyga, Olya Kroytor, Katya Isaeva, Keta Gavasheli, Julia Tatarchenko, Apollinaria Broche, and AFFF Collective. Highlights include The Fulcrum, a two-hour performance where Kroytor is standing on a high post, physically and symbolically trying to find support in reality, and Broche’s installation of a magic carpet cut-off in the shape of an airplane, serving as a painful reminder of the beauty of souring in the clouds.

Through “Bon Voyage,” GIRLGIRLGIRL Gallery seeks to increase awareness of Eastern European women artists on the international art scene and promote their institutional recognition. Belousova traveled from Berlin to Paris with the exhibition and the artworks, carrying the voices of the artists who couldn’t make it due to the current travel restrictions. “Metaphorically artworks are a substitute of a personal meeting, they create a dialogue and a possibility to be in touch with artists of different regions and origins,” said Belousova.
