Nearly a year after the Centre Pompidou and the West Bund Development Group announced their upcoming partnership, the Centre Pompidou x West Bund Museum Project opened this week in Shanghai. The largest-ever cultural exchange and cooperation project between two countries, the space was designed by the office of architect David Chipperfield and resides on the bank of the Huangpu river, where it measures at around 82,000 square feet.
Inside, three galleries will feature presentations from the Centre Pompidou’s collections, including three semi-permanent exhibitions over the course of five years and two temporary exhibitions a year, as well as an area for multimedia installations, a space for emerging artists, and an activities hall and auditorium.
Inaugurating the new space, visitors will find “The Shape of Time,” a show covering the art history of the 20th and 21st centuries, and a presentation bringing together fifteen artists from the Pompidou’s New Media collections, entitled “Observations.”
