Renowned Aussie-raised and New York-based artist Cj Hendry recently debuted the project “STRAYA,” part of which took place May 21-23 in Brisbane.
After a seven-year hiatus in Australia, the hyper-realistic artist returned home with a new series and two-part exhibition based on Australianisms. From May 10-20, Hendry created a road trip around the country, focusing on the extraordinary Australian landscape, paying respect to the traditional custodians of the land. Road signs featuring Aussie slang like “Hoo Roo,” “Spenno,” “Avago,” “Bewdy,” “Noice,” and “Pluggers” could be seen curbside, on the beach, and at various sightseeing points.
Hendry also designed a card game, STRAYA – SLANGUAGE, to honor the Australian vernacular, building a large-scale installation entirely around this idea. The 3-day-only interactive show opened over the past weekend, featuring 30 works, where visitors of all ages donned yellow flip-flops (pluggers) to explore a warehouse filled 700 tons of sand.
