Daniel Buren and Miles Greenberg

Daniel Buren Meets Miles Greenberg at Art Basel Paris

As part of the Reiffers Art Initiatives Mentorship program, legendary French artist Daniel Buren will guide rising talent Miles Greenberg toward a joint exhibition debuting during Art Basel Paris.

This October, during Art Basel Paris, Reiffers Art Initiatives will unveil its fifth annual mentorship exhibition with a duo that promises to define the season: Daniel Buren and Miles Greenberg. The legendary French conceptual artist will not only accompany the 28-year-old Canadian performer and sculptor, but also debut a monumental site-specific work for the Reiffers Art Center—one that will remain as a lasting intervention within the institution.

A Milestone Unfolds in Paris

For Paul-Emmanuel Reiffers, founder of the Mazarine Group and Reiffers Art Initiatives, this new edition marks a milestone. “After four years of mentorship from major international figures such as Rashid Johnson, Kehinde Wiley, Lorna Simpson, and Ugo Rondinone, I am particularly pleased that the first French artist to take on this role is Daniel Buren—a true living legend who is esteemed and recognized both in France and abroad,” he said.

Since the 1960s, Buren has worked with the architecture and context of exhibition sites, often transforming entire environments through his iconic 8.7 cm stripes. From Les Deux Plateaux in the Palais-Royal to Pavoisée at the Elysée Palace, his interventions have redefined the possibilities of art in situ. His work continues to be celebrated worldwide, with dedicated presentations at leading institutions like MoMA.

Behold Profound Artistic Dialogue

What makes this year’s mentorship compelling is not a pursuit of similarity but one of tension. Buren himself remarked, “What immediately attracted me to Miles Greenberg’s work, beyond its obvious qualities, is the absence, at first glance, of any connection with mine. Our joint exhibition will allow two different, very marked practices to mix and confront each other. This approach, which is a priori more confrontational, is of particular interest to me.”

Greenberg, based between Paris and New York, has quickly established himself as one of the most fearless voices of his generation. His performances test the limits of endurance and the body—walking 24 hours nonstop for OYSTERKNIFE in 2020, staging visceral tableaux at the Louvre in 2023, and presenting new work at the Venice Biennale in 2024. His sculptural practice, often based on scans of his own body, brings the same intensity to form and space. “Establishing this dialogue with Daniel Buren is both an honor and a challenge,” Greenberg shared. “These correspondences and tensions seem to me to be a fertile ground for explorations of great richness.”

The Reiffers Art Initiatives exhibition, opening October 22, 2025, promises an intergenerational conversation at once confrontational and fertile, shaped by the dialogue between Buren’s architectural interventions and Greenberg’s corporeal explorations. It is a pairing set to capture the attention of Paris—and the wider art world—this fall.
