Rougier&Plé, a brand connected with creativity and modernity, will unveil a new store façade, designed by Daniel Buren, in Paris beginning September 19. The building transformation will be done at the Rougier & Plé historic boutique in the Marais, on Boulevard des Filles du Calvaire, which will mark the celebration of their 170th anniversary. The building design will enhance the cultural significance of the Marais through a modern and creative take that is refreshing.
Daniel Buren Transforms Rougier&Plé in the Marais
Buren’s store façade entitled, In Situ, for Rougie&Plè’s boutique utilizes strong visual elements that catch the audience’s eyes through the whiteness of the marble and the explosion of color. The building is consistently designed with vertical strips of black and white that are 8.7 cm wide. There are moments of color splashed onto the building such as red, blue, and yellow through strips on the bottoms and on the windows. The transformation Buren intended for the site was a welcoming space that was in tune with the environment by finding meaning through the tools used. The black and white strips harmoniously blend with the colored windows through diamond and triangle motifs. Buren’s inspiration for the design was his passion for the circus world and he infused the atmosphere around it by inviting joyous colors and energy throughout the shapes.
“Color is the only thing inherently impossible to describe, it is pure thought,”
— Daniel Buren
The In Situ project presented Rougie&Plè the opportunity to reclaim the space of their historic building. Buren’s work in this project attained full engagement into architectural evolution on the building while maintaining the integrity of its historical roots. The store façade provides a crisp perspective on the unconventional form of the historic location by integrating a coherent design that is uniquely inspiring and invites you into the creative space. The blend of history and modernity in the building transformation have Rougie&Plè and Buren eager to meet new audiences that want to come and explore.
Who is Artist Daniel Buren
Born in 1938, the French artist, Buren, became a prominent artist over time in painting, sculptor, and installation art. Despite being one of the most recognizable artists of our time, many are unaware of the originality, depth, and creativity Buren brings out in his work.
