As spring blooms this week in New York, the leading international art fair Frieze New York descends upon The Shed, and throughout the vibrant city, with a robust presentation of solo exhibitions and curated booths from more than 60 premier galleries, on view to the public May 1-5.
Alongside major partner Deutsche Bank, and helmed for the third year in a row by Christine Messineo, Director of Americas, Frieze, this year’s iteration unveils a much-anticipated enterprise with Stone Island, invoking an expressive painting by Focus artist Hasani Sahlehe into the event staff’s spirited attire. The influential fair partners with principal organizations including High Line Art, Performance Space, Artists Space, Art Production Fund, and Rockefeller Center to rejoice in euphoric performance art, artist-led programming, and impressive activations for a cosmopolitan audience.
A New Era of Frieze New York
“We look forward to welcoming artists, collectors, institutions and art enthusiasts to The Shed for what will be another memorable Frieze New York,” said Messineo. “Surveying our participating galleries, I’m struck by how they excite, challenge and prompt reflection. The presentations are complemented by artist-led programming in collaboration with celebrated non-profits. Frieze New York reflects the vibrancy and depth of cultural engagement in New York, the proud capital of the international art world.”
38 local participants bring essential New York flavor to the global affair, and exhibitors hailing from 25 counties offer diverse sentiments and outlooks on the ever-evolving human experience through evocative artworks. Long-standing exhibitors of the inspiring Focus platform Château Shatto and Instituto de Visión are newly inaugurated into the admired Galleries section, while the distinguished self-taught creatives Andrew Edlin Gallery, Mitre Galeria, Gordon Robichaux, and Stevenson make appearances within both platforms.
Alex Katz, Elias Sime, Sylvie Fleury, and More Solo Presentations
A must-see solo presentation by artist Alex Katz at Gladstone Gallery and the visionary Elias Sime (who is currently lighting up the 60th Venice Biennale) showing with James Cohan. Sylvie Fleury’s solo booth is co-presented by Sprüth Magers and Karma International, culminating in a visceral spectacle of our industrialist society by way of video, sculpture, and more. Awe-inspiring and emotional paintings and works on paper by Hiroshi Sugito are on display with Tomio Koyama Gallery. And Filipino-American abstractionist Leo Valledor, a pioneering founder of Manhattan’s own Park Place Gallery, proposes meticulously shaped canvases with Silverlens.
Dual and Themed Presentations Link Leading Artists
A celebration of artist Beverly Buchanan’s shimmering career—with Abstract Expressionist paintings of the 1970s, intimate works on paper from the 80s, and iconic shack sculptures of the 90s—manifests in a dual exhibition with the illustrious self-taught creative Thornton Dial of Andrew Edlin Gallery.
Suki Seokyeong Kang, Beatriz Cortez, and Clarissa Tossin of Commonwealth and Council revel in recent, successful museum presentations, and together they deeply explore a shared passion for collaging avant-garde modern technologies with beloved craft traditions—culminating in a poignant study of past, present, and future.
Lumi Tan Curates Focus Platform
Deftly curated by Lumi Tan, Curator, Writer and Curatorial Director, Luna Luna, the Focus platform of Frieze New York offers transcendent solo shows by galleries 12 years and under. Stone Island’s unyielding support of emerging galleries at the event is highlighted through the eye-catching uniforms conjuring Atlanta-based Sahlehe’s poetic and lyrical painting Trying Green, alongside art gallery Tif Sigfrids.
New York photographer Stanley Stellar, showing with Kapp Kapp, raises the curtain on ten riveting, new technicolor works—-veering from their beloved practice of black-and-white photography—which focus on the queer community’s stomping grounds at the city’s piers during the 1970s and 80s.
Gordon Robichaux brings a rapturous solo exhibition of artist, activist, and minister Reverend Joyce McDonald. Mitre Galeria shows the beguiling drawings, paintings, and objects of davi de jesus do nascimento, imparting the little-seen nuances of the creative’s own community at the banks of the São Francisco River.
