Whitewall continues its coverage of how art world inhabitants navigate Art Basel Miami Beach and their thoughts on Miami’s art week with Candice Madey, owner of the Lower East Side gallery, On Stellar Rays. This year, the gallery will show the work of Brody Condon, Zipora Fried, and John Houck at NADA Art Fair (Booth 611), opening on Thursday, December 6 through 9 at the Deauville Beach Resort.
My first time at Art Basel Miami Beach I tried to see everything, and I think I may have actually accomplished it.
This year I plan to accomplish a grand introduction of three new bodies of work at NADA, including a new video game piece by Brody Condon (his first in 6 years), and a new large-scale landscape photos by Zipora Fried, and my first time showing works by John Houck, who recently joined the gallery.
I prioritize my time by not staying out too late until Saturday and Sunday nights. Being tired is the worst.
Miami isn’t over because everyone loves an excuse to go to Miami in December, and for New Yorkers, it’s so easy to get there.
My advice for an ABMB first timer is to have fun, party, and try to go to the everglades.
Every year I make sure I have at least one meal at Lester’s Cafe.
My hotel of choice is… I hate hotels. I rent a big condo by the beach, so the gallery artists have a place to stay.
The event I won’t miss this year is Miami Art Museum’s Crash the Ball. It was the most unexpectedly fun party I went to last year. It was a more local event, I felt like I crashed a wedding. I went with a group of friends and some gallery artists. I hardly knew anyone there, which is unusual and refreshing at times, so we really let loose and danced like crazy all night. I plan to go again with a group of friends Saturday night.
You won’t see me without my rental bike. I have been cycling everywhere the last couple years. Keeps me feeling healthy.
I’ll go to the beach if I… I always go to the beach! On the Monday after the fair, Nina Johnson of Gallery Diet and I have a tradition of yoga at the Soho House in the morning, then brunch, a full day at the beach, and if I was successful [at the fair], a massage! Great incentive to work hard and I look forward to it all week.
