Guest Editor Sarah Arison Shares Her Recs for Miami Art Week 2024

The President of the Arison Arts Foundation is back to Guest Edit this year's edition of Whitewaller Miami.

I’m excited to welcome you to Whitewaller’s Miami Art Week edition! As this year’s guest editor, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on the incredible exhibitions, fairs, and events that highlight the dynamic arts scene of this city I call home.

I look forward to Miami Art Week year-round. The city buzzes with creativity and energy as artists and collectors descend on the city to celebrate. The experience is truly unrivaled.

Sarah Arison’s Miami Tips

For my tips on what to see, I must start with YoungArts, as it is especially close to my heart. This year, YoungArts (2100 Biscayne Boulevard) has partnered with MoMA PS1 to present two offerings: In its Gallery, four South Florida–based artists will host open studios, allowing visitors a behind-the-scenes peek into their artistic processes. The artists’ practices deal broadly with the body and the ways it holds history and memory, creating a tie-in with two fantastic video works by iconic multidisciplinary creative Ralph Lemon on view across the plaza in the Jewel Box. I encourage you to carve out time to experience both of these activations.

It’s always a treat to check out new works by YoungArts award winners on view throughout the fairs, galleries and in pop-up exhibitions around town. I know I will! I am certainly visiting NADA, where interdisciplinary artist Nichole Caridad Hernandez will have a sculpture on view in the gardens. Untitled Art Fair in Miami Beach will also have works by some of the most outstanding artists around the world, including YoungArts award winners.

Art Basel Miami Beach is the center of Miami Art Week and of course cannot be missed. I highly recommend some prep time before you enter the fair; I always bring a map marked with my can’t-miss galleries!

As for local galleries, Miami’s own scene is world-class: Primary in Little River, David Castillo in the Miami Design District, and Nina Johnson Gallery in Little Haiti always make it to my itinerary.

Must-See Miami Exhibitions

Miami arts institutions will once again make for a truly inspiring week. I’m beyond thrilled to see the incredible José Parlá’s “Homecoming” at PAMM. Also on my list are “Mirror of the Mind: Figuration in the Jorge M. Pérez Collection” at El Espacio 23 and “Keiichi Tanaami: Dream Collage” at ICA Miami.

This week will be filled with mind-blowing exhibits and moments of inspiration, so be sure to schedule some time to unwind, whether that means soaking up the sun at the beach, grabbing lunch at a favorite spot, or strolling through the Miami Design District’s outdoor art spaces. A little rest goes a long way in making sure you get the most out of your experience!

I hope you have an unforgettable time exploring Miami Art Week, taking in our beautiful city, and connecting with fellow art lovers. And don’t forget to stay hydrated, wear comfy shoes, pack a snack, and carry a portable phone charger for all the photos you’ll want to snap! If you see me around, don’t be shy—come say hello!
