The 12th Havana Biennale is currently taking place in Cuba, and is a celebration of contemporary Latin American and Caribbean art. For the first time, the event is sponsored by Louis Vuitton, who will be supporting the Galleria Continua (Miami), along with friends of the House Anish Kapoor, Carlos Garacicoa, Daniel Buren, José Yaque, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Nikhil Chopra, and Shilpa Gupta.
The Biennale was established in 1984 and since its inauguration, it has blossomed into an acknowledged and revered show of non-Western art. The curatorial team from Havana’s Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Art Center selected the theme “Between the Idea and Experience,” intended to make a decided and uninhibited connection between the event and the city streets. The center, located alongside the quintessentially Cuban Plaza de la Catedral, wanted this year’s event to better involve the surrounding population and professional communities.
In keeping with these ideas, there was no official opening to the Biennial and there is no official venue. Now through June 22 will simply be a period of elevated appreciation and celebration of dance, theatre, music, film, and literature by artists from the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Many galleries welcomed new artists and will have adjusted hours and events for the event. Louis Vuitton continues its commitment to “move the frontiers of Fashion and Art” in its newly forged partnership.
