This December, Art Basel’s renowned Conversations program returns to Miami Beach with a renewed sense of urgency and reach. Across three days (December 4-6) the series gathers artists, scholars, collectors, technologists, and cultural leaders to examine the forces actively reshaping contemporary art. Designed as a space for public dialogue, the 2025 edition explores critical questions at the intersection of creativity and broader social currents—from the growing entanglement of sports and culture to the complexities of digital expression and the future of global museums. With daily Digital Dialogues and special partnerships spanning OffBall, UBS, and the German Consulate General in Miami, the program offers a panoramic view of ideas driving the art world forward.
Sports × Art Day: A Full Day Devoted to the New Cultural Arena

On December 4 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, Art Basel opens this year’s Conversations with an all-day exploration of how athletics and visual culture increasingly inform one another. “The game of art,” the first session of the day, brings together NFL veteran Malcolm Jenkins and artist Tavares Strachan in a lively exchange moderated by Kimberly Drew, unpacking how competition, discipline, and global fandom can shape artistic practice and cultural influence.
In “Building legacy beyond the court,” former NBA star Elliot Perry joins art advisor Gardy St. Fleur to discuss collecting, philanthropy, and long-term impact, guided by curator Kimberli Gant. The conversation shifts toward women’s sports with “What do (women) footballers want?,” featuring artist and activist Suzanne Lacy in dialogue with New Zealand footballer Ali Riley, moderated by Hans Ulrich Obrist—an exploration of visibility, equity, and agency in the world’s most-watched sport.
The day closes with “Rethinking the field: Museums and the power of sports,” where critic Seph Rodney and artist Paul Pfeiffer, moderated by Shanon Kelley, look at how institutions increasingly engage athletic narratives to expand audiences and rethink cultural value. Presented in collaboration with OffBall, the day underscores the rising significance of sports as both subject and strategy within contemporary art.
Digital Dialogues: Daily Explorations of Tech, Culture, and Image-Making

Each afternoon, Art Basel’s Digital Dialogues take on the fast-evolving realities of creative life online. The opening session, “Meme lords and market gods: The absurdities of digital culture,” convenes digital art luminary Beeple, CryptoPunks co-creator Matt Hall, and curator Amanda Schmitt, with Natalie Stone moderating. Together, they examine the ever-shifting humor, power structures, and market ecosystems that define the internet’s unruly landscape.
Friday continues the series with “The next wave of art collecting,” a forward-looking discussion on how digital tools, decentralized platforms, and new audience behaviors are transforming collection practices. On Saturday, “Infinite scroll: Art, algorithms and images today” brings together artist Maya Man, Yatreda founder Kiya Tadele, and designer Jack Butcher, moderated by Dr. Jeni Fulton. Their conversation probes the algorithmic engines shaping visual culture, from identity construction to economic systems embedded in the feed.

Friday begins with “Building the future of the art world,” featuring sociologist Dr. Larissa Buchholz, curator Pablo León de la Barra, and museum leader Mia Locks, moderated by András Szántó, with an introduction by Noah Horowitz, CEO of Art Basel. The session investigates systemic changes—from global networks to organizational structures—required to create a more sustainable and inclusive cultural ecosystem.
Later in the day, “Writing history now: Art, memory, and the shaping of the present” pairs artist Hank Willis Thomas with art historian Anne Helmreich, moderated by Sandra Jackson-Dumont, for a discussion on how images construct collective memory and civic understanding.
“How Black collectors are reshaping philanthropy,” featuring Victoria Rogers and V. Joy Simmons, MD, moderated by Thomas E. Moore III, examines how a growing community of Black collectors is redefining cultural investment and expanding the narratives supported by major institutions.

Saturday opens with “Sung Tieu: Shaping Germany’s Venice Biennale 2026,” presented in partnership with the German Consulate General in Miami. Artist Sung Tieu joins Gitte Zschoch for an early look at Germany’s direction for the 2026 Venice Biennale and the cultural questions steering the pavilion’s development.
The program turns to Miami with “Miami and the making of a global art hub,” where photographer Anastasia Samoylova and critic Elisa Turner, moderated by Coline Milliard, trace the city’s evolution into an international cultural powerhouse. The day concludes with “Beyond trends: Building a timeless collection,” presented with UBS, as Dan Sallick and Matthew Newton discuss enduring approaches to collecting in an age of rapid shifts in taste and technology.
