Laura Mitterand: What To See at This Year’s Independent Fair

INDEPENDENT New York opens to the public tomorrow in its new home of Spring Studios at 50 Varick Street. We asked Founding Executive Director Laura Mitterrand about this year’s edition, on view through March 6.

“There’s a lot to look forward to in this 2016 edition of Independent. We are moving locations to Spring Studios, in Tribeca. The new space is vastly different from the previous one, and the layout for each gallery will be more coherent within the larger scheme. On the ground floor we are introducing a new section, ‘Independent Firsts’, with 6 galleries participating for the first time: VI, VII (Oslo), Fleisher/Ollman (Philadelphia), Mitchell Algus (New York), Silberkuppe (Berlin), Garth Greenan (New York), and Chapter NY (New York). I believe this eclectic group of galleries will bring a noticeable dynamic, and their pairing will emphasize their respective originality. On the upper floors, many galleries have opted for solo presentations and once again Independent will offer the opportunity of seeing a concentration of unique quality. Highlights include Evan Holloway (Kordansky, Los Angeles); the highly influential, yet little seen, Karl Wirsum drawings from the 60’s (Jay Gorney / Derek Eller); and a selection of David Diao from the late ’70s (Office Baroque). The list goes on…” — Laura Mitterrand
