The Women In Motion Award was officially presented to Liz Johnson Artur by Kering and the Rencontres d’Arles at the inaugural event of the 52nd Rencontres d’Arles Festival this week. The Russian-Ghanaian photographer’s work was displayed as Artur shared her creative journey and views on women’s place in photography at the ceremony.
Since 2019, the Women In Motion program has celebrated the career of an outstanding photographer each year. The award is accompanied by an endowment of 25,000 euros to acquire works by the winning artist for the Rencontres d’Arles collection. Past recipients include Susan Meiselas and Sabine Weiss.
This year’s recipient, Artur, has been dedicated to inspecting worldwide African diaspora in her practice, in which she created documentary photographs in black and white and in color to depict the complex landscape of Black identities. Artur often uses people as the central subject in her body of work as she seeks to bring out the overlooked representations.
“Women have been part of the history of photography from the outset, and they have produced incredible work. The great thing about this award is that it shines a spotlight on works that haven’t always been adequately recognized, and it alerts us to the fact that recognizing women photographers shouldn’t just happen once a year,” said Artur.
