Michael Benisty’s art work, celebrated for its clever, eye-catching details, can be seen all over Miami. We’ve seen a gleaming gold Buddha at Faena Hotel Miami Beach’s restaurant Pao, and now, the artist is turning heads with his Love Dogs sculpture at SLS South Beach for Art Basel 2017. With this piece, Benisty celebrates an interpretation of two iconic forms, drawing inspiration from Jeff Koons and Keith Haring.
The artist’s inspiration first began in the 1990s, when he left Europe for New York. He witnessed Koons’ infamous balloon dog sculpture all over his home country, but was introduced to Haring’s work through a New York mural on an unassuming building. This piece represents two unmistakable works by those artists, with a contemporary interpretation. Now on the roof at SLS, you can catch a glimpse of the seven-foot-tall sculpture made from mirrored-polished stainless steel.
Special for the installation, as well, are miniature versions available for purchase at Marcowicz Fine Art Gallery in the Design District. In addition to silver, the collection is available in pink and blue electroplated steel.
