Oskar Metsavaht on Miami, Scooters, and Art

No contributor

Founder and Creative Director of Osklen gives Whitewaller his take on Miami during the Art Basel Miami Beach art fair.

WHITEWALLER: What art activities are you involved in during Art Basel Miami Beach this year?

OSKAR METSAVAHT:This year I’m participating in an exhibition at the private pop-up club by Casa Elyx at the Edition hotel. The curator Marc Pottier invited four artists from the “Cidade Matarazzos” exhibition that happened in São Paulo last October.

My work “Interfaces” will be shown at that rooftop space with a series of photographs from a film I made during my creative immersion in the contemporary art museum, Inhotim, in Brazil—so I’m very excited to be here.

WW: What is your favorite way of getting around Miami?

OM: When I am in Miami for the art fair I ride a scooter so that I can easily navigate all of the events and activities. It’s also a great way to surf the city.

WW: What do you enjoy most about Miami’s art week?

OM: I love the combination of hotels and beach/ nature in Miami. I am really interested in this idea of interfaces, for example, the interface between the human body and what we feel when we see an artwork. I am interested in that moment of feeling and emotion that happens in between the physical body and the art. In the same way Miami has luxury hotels next to beach and blue sky. The interface is not in between black and white in the sense that black and white makes grey, its something all on its own in-between. Miami is like that.
