Post-Fair Debuts with a New Name in Santa Monica for LA Art Week

Evolved from the Santa Monica Post Office, the three day art fair features esteemed galleries from around the world like Sprüth Magers, Gordon Robichaux, and more.

Post-Fair, the contemporary art fair formerly known as the Santa Monica Post Office, is now open through February 22 in Los Angeles.  The three-day event takes place in the art deco-designed space built in 1938 and will be filled with 29 local, national, and international art galleries, prioritizing accessibility, and simplicity in open-format solo presentations.

Evolving from its former name, Post-Fair runs with the same organizers, venue, concept, and mission. The name change allows the fair to expand outside the unique setting, exploring accessible fairs regardless of the location. “The first edition will be staged in a beautiful, disused Art Deco post office—an iconic setting for an intimate and engaging fair in the heart of Santa Monica a short distance from Frieze LA,” said founder Chris Sharp. The show features leading artists Sara Cwynar, Siobhan Liddel, Kaari Upson, and more with innovative designs.

Chris Sharp, founder of Post-Fair and owner of Chris Sharp Gallery, Los Angeles, created the fair after his experience with organizing a boutique expo with Art Basel. He desired a more efficient and accessible space for everyone to enjoy art with no worries of high costs. The improved gallery offers both galleries and visitors a low fee, inviting everyone with a shared passion for art to join.

“Post-Fair is a response to the current art fair landscape. With lower costs for galleries and visitors, it offers a simpler, more focused experience centered on solo presentations. The first edition will be staged in a beautiful, disused Art Deco post office—an iconic setting for an intimate and engaging fair in the heart of Santa Monica a short distance from Frieze LA,” said Sharp.

The 29 galleries include a diverse range of art on canvases, sculptures, and unique spaces. From Toronto and Tokyo to local Los Angeles galleries, the fair is a gathering of all forms of creativity. Here are a few galleries you don’t want to miss out on.

Showing some love for local artists, Sprüth Magers makes its way to Post-Fair with Los Angeles based artist Kaari Upson. Emerging from its roots in Germany the gallery has locations in Berlin, London, Los Angeles, and New York. Sprüth Magers works with over 70 artists constantly looking for promising young artists. Their Los Angeles Gallery was designed by the iconic architects William L. Pereira & Associates in the 1960s. It has featured standout exhibits by artists like George Condo, Hanne Darboven, and Cao Fei. At Post-Fair, Upson is highlighted with her uniquely formed ceramic cups. Her design is full of whimsy, texture, and color.

Coming all the way from Toronto, the contemporary gallery Cooper Cole presents Canadian born artist Sara Cwynar. The gallery focuses on representing a blend of Canadian and international artists in any point of their creative careers. They curate around fifteen exhibitions a year traveling to major art fairs around the world, like Post-Fair where Cwynar displays her vivid and magnetic photography. Using bright romantic reds and pinks her subject takes a new perspective.
