In this edition of Whitewall’s Miami Questionnaire we hear from the one and only, Simon de Pury, chairman and co-founder of Phillips de Pury & Company. De Pury was born in Basel and has, “seen every single edition of Art Basel from the very first one that took place in 1970 to the 43rd that took place in 2012.” The fair had such an impression on him that he “knew then and there that I wanted a career in the art world.” We are sure you’ll see de Pury in Miami this week, likely at Bill Viola’s “Liber Insularum” exhibition dinner co-hosted with with MOCA Miami North and Stella McCartney.
My first time at Art Basel Miami Beach was in 2003. It was a revelation. The way the local collectors generously opened their doors to the international visitors and have made sure of putting up something new ever since is truly amazing. The proximity of the beach, the dream climate and the fun of the ancillary activities have made it a magic all round experience.
This year I plan to look, look and look!
I prioritize my time by going with the flow.
Miami isn’t over because I can’t imagine ending a busy year in a better way.
My advice for an ABMB first timer is to pace yourself if you want to still be with it on day three and if you want to still be alive on day five.
Every year I make sure I have at least one meal at Casa Tua.
My hotel of choice is Lobby and Mr. Chow at W, garden and pool at Raleigh.
The event I won’t miss this year is our dinner for Bill Viola co-hosted with MOCA Miami North and Stella McCartney.
You won’t see me without my red Smythson diary.
I’ll go to the beach if I am up early enough.
