On November 7, Brussels-based social entrepreneurship The Skateroom launched a limited-edition series of decks designed by contemporary artists Walead Beshty and Kelley Walker. Comprised of 12 skateboard deck designs, the new collection debuted with an event at the Marciano Art Foundation.
Known for exposing the flaws of society via the use of advertising jargon and cultural images, Walker designed two series, for a total of eight skateboard decks. Walker’s first set in the series (composed of five decks that make up a larger image) depicts a house and a swimming pool dangling off a cliff, with the slogan “fight capitalism.”
Beshty’s decks feature his camera-less photographs, created by curling paper during its exposure to yellow, magenta, and cyan light. The artist’s four deck designs urge viewers to consider the image’s relationship to reality and the space in which it exists.
A portion of the proceeds from the limited-edition decks will be donated to the artists’ organization of choice. For Beshty, donations will go to the The Rural Changemakers, and for Walker, a percentage will be given to Skateistan.
