On February 29 in Los Angeles, the much-anticipated fifth edition of Frieze Los Angeles will be unveiled once again at the Santa Monica Airport, with singular presentations from more than 95 exhibitors and major institutions on display through March 3. With long-standing partnership alongside Deutsche Bank, the fair’s newly revisioned structure, created by architectural studio WHY’s Kulapat Yantrasast, further develops the trademark tent and reveals the adjoining outdoor space as an opportunity for festive connection with the international art community.
Frieze’s Director of Americas Christine Messineo Ushers in a New Era of Enlightenment
Frieze’s Director of Americas Christine Messineo ushers in a new era of enlightenment with the fair’s Focus platform, which illuminates the vision of young US galleries; Essence Harden, Visual Arts Curator of the California African American Museum, newly spearheads this category with the highly-relevant theme of ecology as a foundation for creators including Yeni Mao, Javier Ramirez, Ser Serpas, and the late Harry Fonseca. Noteworthy collaborations with Art Production Fund and the Center for Art and Advocacy—as well as the return of essential initiatives, including the Deutsche Bank Frieze Los Angeles Film Award—promise an unforgettable celebration of art’s ability to connect and transform our modern world.
“Frieze Los Angeles 2024 will be a destination for an international audience, coming together to celebrate the continued growth of the Los Angeles art scene,” said Messineo. “Both visitors and exhibitors will benefit from our expanded footprint, centralized layout, and redesigned exterior spaces. We look forward to welcoming galleries from around the globe (including leading art spaces across Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America), from Korea to Mexico, Japan to Germany, alongside a strong core of exhibitors from across California, to provide an unparalleled snapshot of today’s most compelling artists and galleries.’
International Galleries Join LA-Based Pioneers, Museums, and Non-Profits at Frieze LA
Distinguished international galleries such as David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth, Gagosian, Gallery Hyundai, OMR, White Cube, Sprüth Magers, and Gladstone join LA-based pioneers including Night Gallery, David Kordansky Gallery, Anat Ebgi, François Ghebaly, Various Small Fires, and L.A. Louver in the fair’s sweeping main section. 13 stellar first time participants, from Silverlens of Manila, to MadeInGallery and Bank of Shanghai, join exhibitors from over 21 countries across the globe.
Legendary museums within the city such as LACMA, Getty, The Broad, Hammer Museum, and The Museum of Contemporary Art, will host dynamic exhibitions and events for visitors throughout the run of the fair. Meanwhile, Art Production Fund’s “Set Seen” presentation of larger-than-life works by illustrious artists like Derek Fordjour, Sharif Farrag, Cynthia Talmadge, and Pippa Garner, wil pay opulent homage to Hollywood’s golden footprint in Los Angeles and a prismatic history of set design—beautifully shining light on the deft veiling of the Douglas Aircraft Company at Santa Monica Airport by skilled set designers during WWII.
Five extraordinary non-profits, Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND), AMBOS (Art Made Between Opposite Sides), People’s Pottery Project, GYOPO, Gallery 90220, and Black-owned bookstore Reparations Club, unite the potent themes of social impact and art within the fair’s programming in support of positive growth and development for all humankind.
