WEDNESDAY

Heidi Bucher at Alexander Gray Associates
April 9 – May 18
Opening: April 9, 6-8pm
508 West 26th Street
The exhibition focuses on Bucher’s “skinnings,” the works for which the artist is most well-known.  Studies of personal, cultural, and collective memory and experience, the “skinnings” examine architectural elements of historically and personally significant buildings.

THURSDAY

Robert Longo: “Strike The Sun” at Petzel Gallery
April 10 – May 10
Opening: April 10, 6-8pm
456 West 18th Street
Petzel Gallery presents “Strike The Sun,” a solo exhibition by Robert Longo in partnership with Metro Pictures. At Petzel, Longo looks to the U.S. Capitol building and the American flag, two highly polarizing national symbols.

Robert Longo: “Gang of Cosmos” at Metro Pictures
April 10 – May 23
Opening: April 10, 6-8pm
519 West 24th Street
“Gang of Cosmos” includes twelve charcoal drawings of well-known Abstract Expressionist paintings. In entering into this dialogue with major figures of 50 years ago, Longo acknowledges Abstract Expressionism’s undiminished importance in American art and its influence on his own thinking.

Rochelle Feinstein: “Love Vibe” at On Stellar Rays
April 10 – May 11
Opening: April 10, 6-8pm
1 Rivington Street
Feinstein will present a singular painting installation comprised of six large-scale works on canvas, begun in 2001 and completed in 2014, paired with a video projection. The work originated as a reflection on the accumulation of knowledge of the formulation of taste, and the declarations of value through a codified language.

Vik Muniz: “Album” at Sikkema Jenkins Co.
April 10 – May 10
530 West 22nd Street
“Album,” a new series of work by Vik Muniz, utilizes personal photographs in black and white and sepia tones to compose images appropriated from found photographs. This current body of work focuses on the materiality of the photograph, drawing attention to the ways in which the physical character of the image is lost as we shift toward digital technologies and new modes of viewing.

FRIDAY

Michael Phelan: “My my, Hey hey” at Horton Gallery
April 11 – May 25
Opening: April 11, 6-8pm
55-59 Chrystie Street
In keeping with Phelan’s formal and conceptual concerns, My my, Hey hey addresses the contemporary American landscape and the role language plays, explicit and implicit, within this contextual framework.  Critically investigating how historically specific models and cultural traditions have been absorbed, co-opted, and repurposed to fit the needs of the popular landscape, Phelan engages the histories of abstraction, conceptual art, and popular culture.
