Venice Awaits: A First Look at Homo Faber 2026

Venice Awaits: A First Look at Homo Faber 2026

Es Devlin transforms Venice’s San Giorgio Maggiore into a luminous landscape of immersive installations celebrating the artistry, ritual, and future of contemporary craft.

Set within the quiet, contemplative grounds of San Giorgio Maggiore, the fourth edition of Homo Faber Biennial returns this fall with “An Island of Light,” a far-reaching exploration of contemporary craftsmanship shaped by light, material, and human touch. Conceived by artistic director Es Devlin, the exhibition unfolds as a sequence of 15 immersive installations that bring together hundreds of artisans from around the world, each contributing to a larger narrative about making, mastery, and the elemental forces that shape both.

An Archipelago of Craft and Connection

Drawing inspiration from the geography of the Venetian lagoon, Devlin imagines the exhibition as an archipelago, each craftsperson an “island” of knowledge and skill, connected through shared traditions and evolving practices. This idea is made tangible through a journey that begins with intimate encounters, recreations of artisan ateliers and portraits of makers—and expands into scenographic environments where light, water, and reflection transform handcrafted objects into something almost otherworldly.

Light as Material and Metaphor

Throughout the exhibition, light operates as both a literal and symbolic force. It animates materials, reveals textures, and underscores the relationship between craft and the natural elements, earth, air, water, and fire. Installations such as A Full Moon Rising and A Feast of Light explore how illumination shapes perception, while others foreground the physical act of making, from woodwork and weaving to porcelain and paper. The presence of artisans working live within the exhibition further dissolves the boundary between finished object and process, offering visitors a rare opportunity to witness craftsmanship as a living, evolving practice.

Extending Beyond the Exhibition Walls

Beyond the main exhibition, Homo Faber extends into the city through Homo Faber in Città, a program that opens the doors of Venetian workshops and cultural spaces, inviting deeper engagement with the region’s rich craft heritage. Participatory workshops, curated experiences, and encounters with makers reinforce the biennial’s broader mission: to elevate craftsmanship as both a cultural legacy and a vital, forward-looking discipline.

A Living Language of Making

At once immersive and expansive, “An Island of Light” positions craft not as a static tradition, but as a dynamic, global language, one shaped by hands, materials, and the enduring energy of light itself.
