VOLTA New York Perfects the Art of Discovery

VOLTA New York returns this spring with cutting-edge programming and the debut of a new location. Through May 22, 49 national and international galleries will exhibit works by an impressive cohort of world-renowned and newly celebrated artists.

The art fair brings together young and middle-market galleries, as well as established galleries, such as Leila Heller (New York/Dubai), Galerie Ernst Hilger (Vienna), Ethan Cohen (New York), and INDA Gallery (Budapest) to present their emerging artists in an experimental forum.

This year, the fair launches its inaugural “Spotlight Prize for NFTs” presented in collaboration with Artsted, an organization empowering visual artists to mint authenticated NFTs of their works. The selection committee is made up of key personalities in the NFT industry: A. Moret, Founder, Editor-in-Chief Installation magazine; Damjanski, digital artist; Kenny Schachter, artist, curator, art dealer; Olive Allen, visual artist, NFT pioneer; and An Rong, Senior Curator at SuperRare.

Galerie l’Atelier presents a new live-painting art activation by Belgian artist Denis Meyers. The artist will create a grand fresco at the fair’s entrance, a natural extension of his practice painting frescoes of unique typographies and abstract figurative shapes. Meyers defines himself as a typographer, a vocation that he inherited from his grandfather, Lucien De Roeck.

Kamiar Maleki, Director of VOLTA, said about this year’s fair, “We put so much hard work and effort into VOLTA over the past two years. We’ve re-strategized and re-positioned, traveling to cities like Copenhagen, Vienna, Madrid, Budapest, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Mexico, New York, and Miami to cultivate new exhibitors, fresh talent, and wider constituencies….our dedication to the fair is paying off. We are returning full speed with both of our fairs in New York and Basel this year. Having these galleries join us on our journey has been critical to our success. With a steady number of returning and established exhibitors from the early VOLTA days to a new group of young and emerging galleries, VOLTA Art Fair continues to be a place where you can discover artists and talent.”

More than 20 galleries will make their VOLTA New York debut this year. Leipzig-based She BAM! is an all-women gallery represented by the French gallerist Laetitia Gorsy. Spotlighting women artists and their careers, the gallery presents a solo by Theresa Möller. Brooklyn-based The Empty Circle provides local and international emerging artists with their first public exhibition opportunity in New York City. The gallery showcases a new series of works by member artist Claudia Doring Baez. Santa-Fe-based Kouri + Corrao Gallery presents a solo show by Korean-American artist Jen Pack

Over 30 art spaces will return to VOLTA New York from past years. Jersey City-based Jonathan LeVine Projects introduces works by Sri Lankan artist Kumkum Fernando, with the ongoing “Reborn universe” project. Based between Istanbul and Düsseldorf, Anna Laudel presents works by Ardan Özmenoglu, Mathias Hornung and Sarp Kerem Yavuz, working across wood, glass, paper, digital media and NFTs. The “media survey” examines the digital world’s complicated sensory perception.

Coinciding with the Frieze Art Fair, VOLTA New York newly opens at 548 West 22nd Street, the former Dia building and Hauser & Wirth gallery space in Chelsea. In joining the Ramsay Fairs family in 2019, VOLTA is back with a refreshed vision as a global art destination for thoughtful curation and creative exploration.
