As part of its 21st annual summer benefit and auction, The Watermill Center will honor art patron Shaikha Paula Al-Sabah this Saturday, July 26 with the event “One Thousand Nights and One Night: Sleepless Nights of Sheherazade.” Preceding the event, Artsy
is hosting an online auction and preview of major works from the benefit. All bids will transfer to paper and be continued at the event. More than 65 students of Robert Wilson’s international summer arts program will also present their new works.
Highlights from the auction include Ophelia (1971) from Hans Breder’s surrealist photography series, Al Taylor’s Untitled (Shrunken Heads with X-Ray Vision) (1993), Norma Markley’s pop culture references Lucy in the Sky (2013), and premium seats, some front row, at the Milan spring shows of Armani, FENDI, Prada, and other major labels.
The event itself will feature on-site performances and installations scattered throughout the eight-acres of The Watermill Center including the U.S. premiere of Robert Wilson’s “Video Portraits of Lady Gaga,”a performance by experimental theatre director and choreographer Dimitris Papaioannou, and veteran auctioneer Simon de Pury. All proceeds go toward The Watermill Center’s year-round artist residency and education programs.
