Yoshitomo Nara: Life is Only One

In mid-March, the contemporary art world heads to Hong Kong to experience Art Basel’s third international fair. As in Basel and Miami, Art Basel Hong Kong attracts a number of gallery, museum, and not-for-profit exhibitions, and Whitewaller, your insider resource for ABHK, recommends visitors try and check out as many as possible.

If you find yourself in Hong Kong this week be sure not to miss “Yoshitomo Nara: Life Is Only One,” a major solo exhibition hosted by Asia Society Hong Kong Center. A virtual funhouse for Nara fans and those just discovering his work of iconic sweet yet sinister characters, and punk rock inspiration. The exhibition, on view through July 26, showcases Nara’s works spanning a 20-year period and features thre new paintings and 17 new drawings.

In addition, recent puppy sculptures will be installed in the art center’s outdoor area, resembling the sculpture Fountain of Youth, a large white teacup filled with stacked heads that appear to cry tears. For more works by Nara head over to Pace Gallery Hong Kong for “Stars,” an exhibition of new works, from March 12–April 25, 2015. This exhibition marks Nara’s first focused engagement of the theme of stars and will feature recent works that combine his adolescent characters with star imagery and his work with burlap.
