Basel returns this June as the undisputed center of gravity for the international art world. The 56th edition of Art Basel anchors a week that now reaches well beyond the Messeplatz — into digital-art platforms, off-site warehouses, riverside dinners, and the city’s exceptional concentration of museums. The 2026 flagship brings together 290 galleries from 43 countries, with more than 20 newcomers and a sharpened focus on connoisseurship and first encounter. This year’s edition is notable for several firsts:
- Basel Exclusive — a major new initiative in which participating galleries reserve significant works to be unveiled publicly for the first time at the VIP opening.
- Unlimited — curated for the first time by Ruba Katrib (Chief Curator, MoMA PS1), presenting 59 large-scale projects across installation, sculpture, performance, and film.
- Parcours — returns under Stefanie Hessler (Director, Swiss Institute) with the theme Conviviality, unfolding through the streets and historic spaces around Clarastrasse toward the Rhine.
- Art Basel Awards commissions — two major public works by the inaugural Gold Award honorees: Nairy Baghramian on the Messeplatz and Ibrahim Mahama on the Münsterplatz.
- Kabinett, Premiere, Feature, Statements, and Edition round out the sectors, with Premiere expanding to 17 presentations of work from the past five years.
Opening in close proximity to the 61st Venice Biennale, the fair extends the momentum of the global calendar — with a number of Biennale artists visible across the halls.
NEW WAYS TO ENGAGE
First Look
A new, invitation-only pilot offering a select group of collectors advance access to previews and extended works from participating galleries ahead of the fair. Drawing on the Premiere and Statements sectors of Art Basel 2026, First Look spotlights recent production and solo presentations by emerging artists — a chance to discover new voices and open conversations before the doors open on June 18. Available exclusively through the Art Basel app (iOS).

Now in its third edition and making its European debut, Art Basel’s platform for art of the digital era is co-curated by artist Trevor Paglen (2026 LG Guggenheim Award; MacArthur Fellow) and digital-art strategist Eli Scheinman around the theme The Condition. Twenty exhibitors — among them Hauser & Wirth, Marian Goodman, Esther Schipper, Sprüth Magers, Almine Rech, and first-time institutional participant HEK (House of Electronic Arts) — present work spanning generative, media, and net art.
Highlights include: Hito Steyerl’s Green Screen (Esther Schipper / Andrew Kreps); Avery Singer’s Shit Coin Maxi (Hauser & Wirth); Andreas Gursky’s Ocean V (Sprüth Magers); a survey of digital pioneer Vera Molnár (Galerie Oniris / Interface Gallery); and works by Ryoji Ikeda, Agnieszka Kurant, John Gerrard, and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer.

An immersive event co-hosted by Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and Keinemusik’s Rampa, presented by art.klub and produced by Nordstern Basel, with Berlin-based visual artist Julian Charrière involved. A DJ set from Rampa plus a special guest. Pre-registration via nordstern.com.

Fondation Beyeler — Riehen
Pierre Huyghe (24 May – 13 September 2026) The first solo exhibition of Pierre Huyghe in a Swiss museum, conceived specifically for the Beyeler and curated by Mouna Mekouar and Anne Stenne. Newly created works, recent films, and living systems transform the galleries into an evolving “soulscape” where fiction, biology, and machine learning blur. The unmissable institutional show of the week.

Angelica Mesiti: Reverb and Nicolas Darrot: Fuzzy Logic, alongside the thematic Labouring Bodies and the permanent presentation La roue = c’est tout. Kinetic art at its most playful and inventive.

Hella Jongerius: Whispering Things at the main museum, with Verner Panton: Form, Colour, Space at the Schaudepot. Worth the short tram ride across the German border to the Gehry-, Hadid-, and Ando-dotted campus.
HEK (House of Electronic Arts) — Münchenstein/Basel
Beyond its Zero 10 debut, HEK remains the city’s home for media and net art — a deep dive into web-based practice from the 1990s onward.
