ZONAMACO Celebrates its 19th Edition in Mexico City

Erica Silverman

6 February 2023

On February 8, the latest edition of ZⓈONAMACO will bring together over 210 international galleries from 26 countries, open through February 12 at Mexico City’s Centro Citibanamex. Exhibitors from cities across Mexico will join those from countries such as Denmark, Israel, France, Spain, and Austria in a sweeping presentation of modern and contemporary artwork, photography, design, and antiques. Founded by Zélika García and headed by Juan Canela, Artistic Director of ZⓈONAMACO and Chief Curator of the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá, the fair is composed of four distinct sections: ZⓈONAMACO MÉXICO ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO®, ZⓈONAMACO DISEÑO®, ZⓈONAMACO SALÓN DEL ANTICUARIO®, and ZⓈONAMACO FOTO®.

Thoughtfully co-executed by Netherlands-based design firm Tom Postma and Mexico-based Salinas Lasheras, the event has a curatorial team that is made up of seven visionaries: Direlia Lazo, from Havana, leads ZⓈONAMACO EJES®, a category of multidisciplinary projects; Esteban King of Mexico City spearheads ZⓈONAMACO ARTE MODERNO®, spotlighting historical treasures and iconic twentieth century artworks; Rio de Janeiro’s Luiza Teixeira de Freitas curated ZⓈONAMACO SUR®, concentrating on artists of the Global South; Cecilia León de la Barra, from Mexico City, returns as Artistic Director of ZⓈONAMACO DISEÑO®, highlighting furniture, textiles, jewelry, and decorative pieces (within this design division, EMERGENTE focuses on cutting-edge designers, and is curated by Cecilia León de la Barra, Joel Escalona, and Jorge Diego Etienne); Sara Hermann of Santo Domingo heads ZⓈONAMACO FOTO®, featuring dynamic works of video and photography; and Alfonso Miranda leads ZⓈONAMACO SALÓN DEL ANTICUARIO®, presenting pre-1960 antiques and artifacts.

The fair’s main section, ZⓈONAMACO MÉXICO ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO®, which exhibits the artwork of renowned galleries and contemporary artists, features a compelling, international selection committee: Ben Loveless of Berlin, Stockholm, and Mexico City’s Galerie Nordenhake; Guilherme Simões de Assis of São Paulo and Curitiba’s Simões de Assis; Karen Huber of Mexico City’s Galería Karen Huber; Lauren Kelly of New York and Los Angeles’s Sean Kelly; Mills Morán of Mexico City and Los Angeles’ Morán Morán; and Teófilo Cohen of Mexico City’s PROYECTOS MONCLOVA

Mexico City’s Le Laboratoire gallery presents an exclusive dialogue between prolific Mexican artists Manuel Rocha Iturbide and Roberto Turnbull, titled “DE OIDO.” The exhibition breaks barriers between music and visual arts through an imaginative synthesis of shapes, colors, auditory metaphors, and games. Rocha Iturbide, composer, sound artist, and researcher, and Turnbull, painter and engraver, unite their paintings, sound sculptures, and collaborative engravings, producing lively, surreal works of art and friendship. Kurimanzutto, of Mexico City and New York, presents a new exhibition by artist Nairy Baghramian titled “modèle vivant.” The show converses with figural creations of 20th century Mexican-based artists Geles Cabrera, Elizabeth Catlett, Helen Escobedo, and Ángela Gurría in a thought-provoking and cross-generational exploration of human form and vocabulary. Shifting colors and materials reveal intimate points of connection and our potential for transcendence. Galería RGR presents a solo exhibition by the late Venezuelan artist Jesús Rafael Soto, commemorating 100 years since his birth and rejoicing in his legendary mark on Kinetic, European, and Latin American art. The sweeping show displays five decades of historical artworks from the estate of Atelier Soto.

Accompanying the fair, a special Conversation Program will include panelists from Mexico City and across the globe, offering in-depth talks on current events from essential figures shaping the art industry, while the Program of Parallel Activities introduces noteworthy editorials and publications.
