On August 11, “Wedding Anniversary” opened at Friedman Benda in Los Angeles. The unique show is a creative collaboration between self-taught ceramicist Candice Romanelli and creative director Darren Romanelli (also known as Dr. Romanelli and DRx), who happen to be husband and wife. On view through October 1, it marks their 15-year wedding anniversary, as well as the gallery’s first exhibition with the artists. “Wedding Anniversary” builds on previous joint work at Stanley Gallery in Pasadena, “Dog Days” at the Pit Palm Springs, and “Built In” at the Neutra VDL in Silver Lake.

“Wedding Anniversary” considers the impact of the couple’s transforming their Los Feliz home into a combined studio throughout the pandemic. Creating and working in close quarters not only affected their individual practices but also fueled their collaborative spirit. The Romanellis encourage each other to explore further into the work; Candice shows her largest artworks yet and her first developments in lighting. Darren uses his experience in the fashion industry to delve significantly deeper into design and sustainability with quilted and upcycled seating. He draws from his work in the sports, design, music, art, and food worlds, collaborating with companies such as Converse, Los Angeles Rams, Coca-Cola and Disney.

Highlights of their domestic lives are site-specifically recreated; a joyful living room context features Darren’s vividly-hued quilted lounge chairs and coffee table, as well as Candice’s delicate quilt ash tray and ceramic and wood side tables. Unique quilt chandeliers and table lamps set the space warmly aglow, with Darren’s quilted dining table, chairs, and sofa furnishing the cozy presentation. “The exhibition is a natural extension of our world. It feels really organic and authentic to our daily life,” said Darren. The couple defines the evocative replication of their home’s atmosphere at the “moment of impact.” The show rejoices in Darren’s dedication to merging worlds to produce an emotional connection; it’s opening included clothing designs by Psychic Outlaw, music by Benny Blanco, and food stylings by Jessica Damuck.
