Today in Basel the BMW Group showcased a prelude to its 18th and 19th BMW Art Cars during the art fair. Contemporary artist Cao Fei is to design the 18th art car, while American conceptual artist John Baldessari will design the 19th. During a talk with the Vice President Design BMW Automobiles Karim Habib, beginning visuals were revealed of the designs’ progressions.
Fei plans to employ the imagery of cars from pop culture like David Cronenberg’s movie Crash and artists like Matthew Barney or Jenny Holzer. She furthers her designs with a connection to the technology-driven 21st century with roots in China. Fei’s BMW M6 GT3 will premiere globally in the summer of 2017 and test the racing tracks in Asia.
Baldessari approaches the endeavor with his minimalist style and personal techniques like the placement of colored dots. He plays off the multi-dimensions from the objectivity of the car and will reflect his stylistic habits of using primary colors. Baldessari’s art car will premiere at Art Basel in Miami Beach 2016 while tearing up the asphalt at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January 2017.
