NOT A HOTEL reimagines what it means to travel, stay, and even own a destination. Founded in 2020, the company operates at the intersection of architecture, art, and lifestyle, commissioning some of the world’s most influential creatives to design fully serviced, one-of-a-kind residences across the country. These are not conventional hotels, but hybrid villas—available through a fractional ownership model—where guests experience the intimacy of a private home alongside the seamless service of a luxury stay. From the forests of Hokkaido to the islands of Okinawa, each property is deeply rooted in its surroundings, embracing Japan’s diverse natural landscapes as a central element of the experience.

Among its most anticipated projects is NOT A HOTEL TOKYO—THE NIGO HOUSE, located in Futtsu, Chiba, a coastal region just outside Tokyo known for its rugged cliffs, sweeping views of Tokyo Bay, and remarkable sightlines toward Mount Fuji. The dramatic topography becomes an essential part of the architecture: The home is embedded into the edge of a cliff, revealing panoramic ocean vistas only upon entry in a carefully choreographed spatial sequence. This dialogue between built form and landscape reflects NOT A HOTEL’s broader philosophy—each property is conceived as a site-specific work, responding to Japan’s seasonal beauty, from coastal light to mountainous terrain.
Central to this vision is the involvement of globally influential creative director NIGO, who not only designed the Tokyo residence but also serves as a creative adviser and investor for the brand, alongside longtime collaborator Pharrell Williams. For NIGO, the project extends his multidisciplinary practice—spanning fashion, music, and design—into architecture, resulting in a space that expresses what he describes as his “entire worldview.” His approach is holistic: from the building’s concept to its interiors, every detail is curated, blending vintage design pieces by Jean Prouvé and Pierre Jeanneret with contemporary art and custom furnishings.
Art at THE NIGO HOUSE

Art is not an accessory here, but a defining element. At THE NIGO HOUSE, a monumental sculpture by KAWS—his signature “COMPANION” figure—sits atop the structure, transforming the building into a landmark visible from afar. Inside, works from NIGO’s personal collection are integrated throughout the residence, alongside collectible design objects and carefully selected furnishings that blur the line between gallery and living space. The result is an immersive environment where architecture and art exist in dialogue, elevating the stay into a cultural experience.
Amenities at NOT A HOTEL properties further reinforce this fusion of comfort and creativity. Guests can expect expansive living areas, private pools, saunas, gyms, and traditional Japanese baths, alongside more idiosyncratic features such as tea rooms designed for ceremonial use, listening rooms with high-fidelity sound systems, and chef-ready kitchens for curated dining experiences. Personalized concierge services extend the experience beyond the home, offering tailored itineraries that connect visitors to the surrounding region—whether through nature, cuisine, or local culture.
NOT A HOTEL represents a new paradigm in luxury hospitality that privileges individuality, artistic collaboration, and a deep sense of place. By merging the sensibilities of global creatives like NIGO with Japan’s extraordinary landscapes and cultural traditions, it offers more than a place to stay, but a way of living that is design-forward, immersive, and distinctly Japanese.
